Letter of credit opening request email template (English)
Ask the buyer to open a letter of credit with the terms you can meet: beneficiary, amount, tenor, shipment and expiry dates, documents and charges, and to send the draft first. The emails are in English, the usual language of international trade. Nothing you type is sent to Triplicate.
Tips for this email
- Agree the terms before the credit is issued: amendments cost time and bank fees, and an amendment only binds you once you accept it. Ask for the draft and check every date, document and name.
- Under UCP 600, documents must be presented no later than 21 calendar days after shipment and within the expiry date (article 14(c)), and partial shipments are allowed unless the credit prohibits them (article 31(a)). Leave enough time between the latest shipment date and the expiry date.
- Only accept documents you can actually obtain: a certificate from an inspection company or a legalised document takes time and money. Your company name and address must match the credit exactly.
