Where these rates come from
The rates are the European Central Bank's daily reference rates for around 30 major currencies, published once each business day (not on weekends or ECB holidays). They are a widely used benchmark, but they are reference rates, not the rate any particular bank or card network will actually apply to a transfer or payment.
Why exporters and importers check rates before invoicing
If you quote in your own currency but the buyer pays in theirs, the rate on the day they pay can differ from the rate on the day you quoted, changing your actual margin. Many exporters check the current rate before finalizing a quote, and some agree a fixed exchange rate or hedge with their bank for large or long-lead-time orders.
Limits to keep in mind
This tool does not cover every currency — smaller or less-traded currencies are often not part of the free reference feed. Rates update once per business day rather than in real time, and the actual rate you receive from a bank, card network or payment platform will include its own margin and fees on top of the reference rate.
Common questions
Are these live, real-time exchange rates?
No. They are official daily reference rates published once each business day by the European Central Bank, not real-time trading rates. For a payment happening right now, your bank or payment provider's own rate is what actually applies.
Why is the rate my bank gave me different from this tool?
Banks, card networks and payment platforms add their own margin and fees on top of the reference rate, and their rate can also move throughout the day while the reference rate updates once. Always confirm the exact rate with whoever is processing the payment.
Why don't I see my country's currency in the list?
This tool uses a free daily reference feed that covers around 30 major currencies. Many smaller or less-traded currencies are not included; check with your bank for a rate on those.
