One notification for Thai food labels

Ministry of Public Health Notification No. 450 is now the sole regulation for labeling prepackaged food in Thailand. It took effect on 19 July 2024, repealing Notification No. 367 and its amendments; labels in the old format could be used until 19 July 2026, so that period has ended.

Labels on prepackaged food made or imported for sale carry Thai text; a foreign language may be added. The Thai label gives the food name, the food serial number, the name and address of the manufacturer or importer, the country of manufacture and an allergen declaration, among other items.

Who prepares and approves the label

The Thai FDA requires pre-approved labels only for specifically controlled foods. For other foods, the manufacturer or importer prepares a label that complies with the notification, so the Thai importer usually drafts the Thai label from the exporter's product information.

Labels designed under Notification No. 367 should be checked against Notification No. 450 before reprinting. Nutrition labeling is set separately by Notification No. 445, in force since 2 July 2024.

Step by step

  1. Agree with the Thai importer who drafts the Thai label.
  2. Give the importer the food name, ingredients and nutrition data.
  3. Get the food serial number for the product through the importer.
  4. Check whether the food is a specifically controlled food that needs label pre-approval.
  5. Check the label against Notification No. 450 before printing.
